Naghain ng isang panukala sa Senado na naglalayong tapyasan ng kalahati ng ibinabayad ng remittance fees ng overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) upang protektahan ang kinikita ng ating kababayan sa abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Layunin ng Senate Bill No. 1074 o mas kikilalanin bilang \u201cOverseas Filipino Workers Remittance Protection Act\u201d na bawasan ng kalahati ang remittance fees ng OFWs upang protektahan sila laban sa mataas na singil, unfair practices at financial exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nakatakda sa SB No. 1074, ayon kay Senador Jinggoy Estrada na atasan ang lahat ng bangko at non-bank financial intermediaries na magbigay ng mandatory 50 percent discount sa remittance fees na puwedeng singilin ang halaga bilang tax deduction sa kanilang operational costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a win-win situation for our OFWs and their families, as well as for banks and remittance centers,\u201d ayon sa mambabatas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor every hour our OFWs spend away from their families, they make irreplaceable sacrifices and time that no dollar can compensate for. Therefore, our law must ensure that their income is protected and utilized \u2014 income that also fuels our economy,\u201d giit ng senador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe least we can do is make sure that every peso sent home reaches their loved ones with its full value intact, and not eaten up by excessive or unfair charges,\u201d paliwanag nya sa panukala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natuklasan ng Senado sa isang pag-aaral na lumilitaw na umaabot sa $38.34 billion ang remittance ng OFWs noong 2024, na 3 percent pagtaas mula sa 2023, na kumakatawan sa 8.3 percent = gross domestic product (GDP) ng bansa at 7.4 percent ng gross national income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inaatasan ng panukala ang lahat ng bangko at financial institutions na magkaroon ng full transparency sa lahat ng transakiyon sa pamamagitan ng pagpapaskel ng peso-equivalent exchange rates sa remittance centers upang maiwasan ang hidden charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bill strictly prohibits the misappropriation of funds, unauthorized deductions, excessive fees, and any increase in remittance charges without prior consultation with concerned government agencies,\u201d nakatakda sa panukala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pagmumultahin ng hindi hihigit sa anim na taong pagkakakulong at multa mula P50,000 hanggang P750,000 at karagdagang parusa sa umiiral na banking law ang sinumang mapatutunayan na lumabag sa panukala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
